Dance and Expression
2/5/04
it's true–
this is my verdict:
partner dancing
relies on
heart, heart,
heart!
no heart, and it's
an exercise of two bodies
desperately
flailing.
perhaps the right connection
begins
in the eyes.
2/6/04
contrary motion–
so intrinsic to all
movement
so essential
in a dance
between two people
3/10/04
having not danced for
over a week
I wonder what
luminous
revival
the next dance floor will bring
3/19/04
it's true:
this activity of
partner dancing
is nearly empty
if there's no
supporting tide
of emotion
3/26/04
rolling on the floor
momentarily forgetting
to be self–conscious
she began to laugh
4/11/04
yes,
one key
to partner dancing
is to be squared off:
my heart to yours,
your face to mine,
our breath meeting
in the space between us,
sharing heat,
filling space,
and making of the space between us
a sacred
gravity
4/19/04
(teaching kids to jump for Newsies)
green spirits unadorned,
they leap and land,
their sixty rubber–soled shoes
a brief applause,
their own laughter
the divine reply
of the cosmos
6/17/04
I like the idea that
dance is the only art form
in which we are
the art
6/26/04
dancing to bad music
is like swimming
upstream
it can be done,
even done gracefully,
but the energy
required
to stay in place
is too great a price
for small returns
7/1/04
we not only fill rooms
when we dance together
we fill the outdoors!
they said our chemistry was
captivating
that we should perform
that we have something
amazing
and we
didn't even feel like
our dancing
was very good that day
7/4/04
we were two giddy spirits
unleashed across the grass
while the rest of the crowd
sat still or
stood in place
at the edge of the stage
8/3/04
music
temporarily
builds rungs
inside my
chest
my
heart climbs
or descends
depending on
the chords
