Types of Poi

Poi: Simplicity and Infinite Variety

At first glance, it may seem that all poi are more or less the same. You have a weight on the end of a length of some sort of flexible material, and sometimes a handle. Simple, right?

But the different kinds of poi - all of the different handles, weights, cords, fabrics, chains, swivels, wick arrangements, shapes etc - can serve very different purposes beyond the most general uses of practicing and spinning fire. The reality is that the unique properties of each kind of poi can help you learn in different ways. A pair of monkey fists and chains will feel very different from stretchy lyrca "sock" poi with water-filled balloons in the ends!

Read further for more information about all of the different types of poi!

Where to Buy Poi and Other Gear

Local Fire People

Some of us locals have gear and parts for sale, and it helps to ask around if you're looking for something specific. I have a few types of practice poi for sale, and soon I'll be selling some made by a friend and fellow poi spinner (and they're aweseome!). You can find chain at hardware stores, swivels at camping/fishing goods stores like 3 Vets, and fabric at places like Dressew and Textile Clearance House. Contact us if you need helping finding something!

Flowtoys - LED Poi and More

LED poi, staffs, and other gear, and incredibly nice people. They're a small company just like us, so we love being able to support them. Any purchases you make through the above link or with the code "nightanddaydance" will help us build our business too!

Home of Poi - a little of everything

This website covers almost everything: fire and LED poi, staffs and other gear, parts, DVDs, online lessons, a community forum, and more. This is where most people in Vancouver buy their gear online, same with us! Again, if you purchase through the above link, we'll earn some points, and that will help us buy more gear for classes, workshops, and performances.
